Course Announcement

Cholera, typhoid, childbirth fever: these infectious diseases once ravaged the world's population on a routine basis. But with the discovery of penicillin in 1928, global health was changed forever. Learn how the research and development of antibiotics has grown into a battlefield of promise and profits, quite possibly at the expense of your health.
The discovery and availability of antibiotics has profoundly altered the treatment of human infectious diseases. From the earliest instances of human intervention (hand-washing to prevent childbirth fever) to the recent controversy surrounding prophylactic use in animal agriculture (cleverly referred to as "antimicrobial stewardship"), this course examines the intriguing biology, chemistry, ecology, and evolutionary biology of antimicrobial warfare.
